Kentucky Derby & Oaks

It’s Derby time!

No, none of our horses are in the Kentucky Derby… but Patsy has her Effie Trinket running in a $300,000 Stakes at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. Had we known that a few months ago, we might be there again with her. Go, Effie!

Hear the Footsteps was supposed to run yesterday on the grass at Belmont but with all the rain, the race was taken off the turf and he was scratched.

Jess Not Jesse is recovering from surgery down on Pat’s farm in Ocala. Hopefully, all will go well. We’ll visit him and the yearling fillies in Florida in about 3 weeks.

If all continues to go well, Ahvee’s Destiny and foal will return from Kentucky to Rojan Farm just outside of Saratoga Springs in about 2 weeks. She is in Foal to Lonhro and the foal in doing well. We miss them and look forward to seeing them soon.

In Kentucky, today is Oaks Day for the females. Everyone tries to wear some pink as part of their outfits (or course, there are many who like to be different!). Rhoda looked at me a little after 9AM and asked if I thought they were downing Bloody Mary’s at Popsy’s? (God only knows if I spelled that right!). The answer was “of course!”

We’ve been part of an eight person Superfecta pool the last few years and have done it again this year. The Superfecta aims to correctly pick the first four finishers (of the Kentucky Derby, in this case) in order. We place a $1 bet on every combination of 8 horses (each of us picks one). Two years ago, we hit. Our $1680 bet returned over $48,000 before taxes. What an incredible feeling to win a bet like that. I was the assigned “suitcase.” Almost all the cash was somewhere on my person and we divvied it up in the limo on the way home. Wow, that was fun!

My selection was California Chrome. The other seven selections are Candy Boy, Dance with Fate, Samraat, Medal Count, Wicked Strong, Intense Holiday and Commanding Curve.

My own top 8 (out of 19 entries) are California Chrome, Dance with Fate, Samraat, Danza, Wildcat Red, Wicked Strong and two real long shots, Vinceremos and Chitu. Frankly, you just never know. I had Medal Count on my list for a long time but the more I looked at his record of not doing so well on dirt, I demurred… but tomorrow we’ll find out for sure.

In today’s featured Kentucky Oaks for the girls, my top 4 (out or 13 entries) are Untapable, My Miss Sophia, Sugar Shock and Rosalind.

Often you can do better picking against my selections but even I get it right once in awhile.

Enjoy the racing and pick some winners!
